Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains,
but to live in a way that respects and enhances the
freedom of others.

A wonderful and inspiring statement.

Holding Mandela in high esteem used, sadly, to attract ridicule in this country. (The wide boys in the comedy series Only Fools and Horses used to live in a block of flats called Nelson Mandela House).

Things have changed for the better.

PBS is showing the film "Mandela: The Long Walk Home" on line. I'm about half-way through it. A very complex character. His birth name meant, "Tree Shaker" or troublemaker. You bet.

We've been listening to this piece of music. Found it by searching for "Nelson Mandela dancing" on youtube. Thought you might like it.

Though of course, Dominic, the UK was one of the leading countries in applying sanctions in the early 70s, and helping to create world awareness about NM.

I agree, Tara — such a charismatic and complex character. An amazing and unique blend of freedom fighter, statesman, diplomat, idealist, pragmatist, visionary. So dignified, so humble (it's not about me, it's about us, it's about Africa, black and white), so gracious (and at the same time so intelligent) in his dealings with the white S. African government after his release.
