This Tree Is Alive



The Way In



















Above is a living tree in Whatcom Falls Park. It's on the trail where I walk frequently. The sign appeared this week. The bark was stripped from the tree about a year ago.

I'm remembering once again that we have some of the same DNA as trees. Trees are family.

It's a beautiful trees. I'm sorry that people have been stripping bark off of it. Your mention of of sharing some of the same DNA as trees puts me in mind of a documentary that I watched this week - Watermark, directed by Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky. Perhaps you know of it already? There is one "story" in it, filmed on the Stikine River, where Oscar Dennis, a first nations man, speaks of how, if we were to stay up on the Stikine, and drink its water for a month or so, and he drank the water, because we are 70 percent or more water, we would be connected, and in the same way, the animals and the plants and trees would be connected to us through drinking or absorbing the waters of the Stikine. I thought that was a particularly wonderful way to think of how were are connected.
